Mount Burgess Mining N.L., a resource exploration company that has been listed on the Australian Stock Exchange since 1985, has projects in both Australia and Africa.
AUSTRALIA
Gold
In Australia the Company is exploring for gold at Telfer, where it has a significant ground holding within 20 kms of Newcrest Mining's huge 17.4 million ounce gold ore reserve at Telfer Main Dome.
The Company holds tenure over both Tim's Dome and East Thompson's Dome. Tim's Dome hosts lithologies similar to those observed at Newcrest's Telfer Mine. Various drilling programmes have shown that much alteration and extensive low grade gold mineralisation occurs for some 2 km of strike at Tim's Dome. At East Thompson's Dome recent studies have concluded that the dome has many similarities to Newcrest's Main Telfer Dome, with good potential to host Telfer style strata-bound gold and base metal mineralisation.
NAMIBIA
Diamonds
In Namibia the Company is exploring for the primary kimberlite host for the diamonds discovered within the project area. The project, consisting of some 8,000 square kilometres, is situated in the north east of Namibia on the border with Botswana. Kimberlitic indicator minerals, including two macro diamonds, were first discovered by Consolidated Diamond Mines within the project area in the early 1980s.
Similar results including the discovery of macrodiamonds were achieved by RTZ in the 1990s. Mount Burgess Mining, which now owns 90% of the project has been exploring for kimberlites in this area since 1999. To date the Company has discovered significant numbers of G10 garnets and five macro diamonds together with two kimberlites and one para-kimberlite. Whilst none of the kimberlites have proven to be diamond bearing, their discovery confirms the presence of kimberlites in the area, as the search continues for the kimberlite source to the G10 garnets and macrodiamonds.
Exploration to date has consisted of the collection of in excess of 4,000 surface loam samples, the acquisition of 1,465 square kilometres of ground and aeromagnetics, the acquisition of 350 square kilometres of ground gravity and 51,000 metres of percussion drilling to test primary geophysical targets and also to obtain kimberlitic indicator mineral samples at the base of the Kalahari sand cover. During 2005 a number of drill holes returned a significant number of very fresh indicator minerals in the western portion of the exploration area indicating the possible presence of a local kimberlite source.
BOTSWANA
Base Metals (Zinc)
Soil geochemical sampling within the diamond exploration area in Namibia has also revealed the potential for the discovery of base metals mineralisation. As a consequence the Company applied for and was granted adjoining ground in Botswana for base and precious metals and more recently nuclear fuels. Previous exploration on this ground, conducted by Billiton Botswana (Pty) Ltd, yielded some very encouraging results.
Billiton concluded in their final report of July 1983 that the results suggested the potential for a large zinc/lead deposit. Wide spaced drilling recently conducted by the Company over a 2.4 km long soil geochemical anomaly of zinc has returned average grades of 3% zinc, 1% lead and 28 g/t silver, with significant credits for copper (up to .34%) and vanadium. Metallurgical test work shows recoveries of 94% for zinc, 93% for lead and 91% for silver. A scoping study, completed by Promet Engineers Pty Ltd in November 2005, based upon an open cut tonnage of 17,500,000 down to 100m, shows that provided infill drilling generates results similar to those obtained from wide-spaced drilling conducted to date, this project has the potential to generate substantial cash flows for the Company. The Company is currently conducting an infill drilling programme down to 150m depth to convert this zone of mineralisation into a JORC compliant resource, with the intention of taking the project through to a bankable feasibility study.
