Zimbabwe’s Empowerment Legislation Is Just A Cover To Allow The Chinese In, But The MDC May Yet Stop The Rot
As a power-sharing pact between Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) emerges, the MDC has revealed that it will seek a reversal of the draconian mining and expropriation legislation pushed into law by Mugabe and his ruling Zanu PF party.
Yesterday, Mugabe, the MDC’s Morgan Tsvangirai, and Arthur Mutambara, leader of the other breakaway faction of the MDC, signed a memorandum of understanding to pave the way for effective negotiations on how to patch up differences.
The power-sharing deal – being brokered by South Africa’s President Thabo Mbeki – is aimed at finding a lasting solution to Zimbabwe’s economic crisis, one that has seen inflation sky-rocket to unprecedented world records in recent years.
