Sunrise Diamonds plc is exploring for diamonds in the Karelian Craton in Finland a geological block that is host to a number of world-class diamondiferous kimberlites (Grib, Lomonosova) in the Arkhangelsk region of neighbouring Russia.
The Company was formed and admitted to AIM in 2005 to continue the diamond exploration activities of its then parent, Tertiary Minerals plc.
The Company’s initial activities focused on discovery of a new kimberlite cluster at Kuusamo in northern Finland, where seven kimberlites have now been defined, three of which are diamondiferous.
In 2005 the Company secured exclusive rights to BHP Billiton’s diamond exploration database for Finland, which has an estimated replacement value of over US$10 million, and this now forms the basis for the Company’s generative exploration programmes in Finland.
In 2006 a Joint Venture agreement was signed with Canada’s Nordic Diamonds Inc. giving Sunrise the right to earn a 75% interest in a further sixteen kimberlite pipes in the Kaavi-Kuopio area of Finland. Some of those pipes, discovered by Ashton Mining in the 1990’s, have not been adequately evaluated for their commercial diamond potential.
Sunrise has an ongoing programme of till sampling, ground magnetics and drill testing of priority diamond targets throughout Finland, based primarily on its interpretation of the BHP Billiton database. It is also conducting further evaluation of its new Kuusamo kimberlite discovers and the existing kimberlites of the Kaavi-Kuopio cluster.
