Company Statement
Donner Metals Ltd. is a Canadian base metal exploration company based in Vancouver. This junior exploration company has a strong senior management team that has led to agreements with major mining companies, including Teck Cominco and Xstrata Zinc Canada. Donner has advanced exploration projects in the mining-friendly Canadian jurisdictions of Quebec and Labrador. These mining exploration projects focus on exploration for zinc, copper, and nickel deposits.
Current Operations
The Matagami Project
The Mining Journal awarded the Xstrata/Donner team with the Outstanding Achievement Exploration Award for the Bracemac-McLeod discoveries made in 2008 at the Matagami Mining Camp in Quebec. The team discovered high-grade zinc, copper, silver and gold mineralization in five new zones at the Bracemac/McLeod area, located 6km southeast of Xstrata’s Matagami Mill. Donner has the option to earn a 50% interest in the large Matagami mining project from Xstrata Zinc. The Matagami project under this joint venture agreement began in late 2006, the first discovery was announced in January of 2007, and the NI43-101 Resource calculation for Bracemac-McLeod was announced in January of 2009.
Scoping Study Advances to Feasibility Study
A scoping study has been completed at the Bracemac-McLeod discovery area of the Matagami Mining Camp. The discovery and continued expansion of sulphide zones at Bracemac-McLeod, located 6 kilometres southeast of the Matagami mill, has resulted in the rapid advancement of the Donner/Xstrata Project at Matagami. By focusing on metallurgical testing, preliminary engineering studies using a ramp access and both capital and operating cost assessment, the study will provide an evaluation of the viability of mine development at Bracemac-McLeod as the next big step towards figuring out the feasibility of production.
Our team is considering a ramp to Bracemac-McLeod from the open pit at former producer Bell Allard South. Advantages include:
- Permitted area
- No new surface disturbances
- Utilizes existing infrastructure
- 2 kilometres drive from portal to Mill
- Plenty of nearby exploration potential
- Traditionally low-cost producing camp
World Class Mining District
There are 18 known VMS deposits in the Matagami Mining Camp including 10 past and 1 current producer. The Donner/Xstrata team have a 4,750 square kilometre area of mutual interest, including 3,340 mineral claims covering 801 square kilometres. Within the extensive project area there are numerous exploration targets with excellent potential for additional discoveries. Any future development under the Donner/Xstrata agreement will benefit from the established infrastructure and facilities. Zinc concentrates produced at Matagami are refined at the Noranda Income Fund zinc refinery in Valleyfield Quebec. Copper concentrates are smelted at Xstrata’s Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda and refined at Xstrata’s Canadian Copper Refinery in Montreal.
South Voisey Bay Project - Nickel-Copper Project
In 1994, on the north-east coast of Labrador, Canada, one of the world's largest nickel-copper-cobalt deposits was discovered near Voisey's Bay. Since this discovery and its subsequent $4.3 billion purchase by Inco, Donner Metals has been actively exploring the area for similar deposits. The focus of this exploration has been an area 90 km to the south of the discovery, referred to as the South Voisey Bay Project. The South Voisey Bay Project area covers the Pants Lake Gabbro Complex, which hosts the best occurrences of anomalous nickel-copper sulphide mineralization in mafic plutonic rocks in Labrador outside of Voisey’s Bay. In the fall of 2007, the Company undertook a low frequency UTEM geophysical exploration program on a portion of the Donner/Commander joint venture as a possible first step in reactivating the entire South Voisey Bay Project. The new geophysical data will be integrated with existing geological, geochemical and geophysical data with the objective of designing additional geophysical programs for the entire South Voisey Bay Project and to generate drill targets.
West Raglan Project: Nickel-Copper Exploration
Donner, by holding an approximate 14% interest in Knight Resources Ltd., has expanded its exposure to a large nickel exploration project in the Raglan area of Québec, known as the West Raglan Project. Knight has earned a 49% interest from Anglo American Exploration (Canada) Limited (‘AAEC’) in their approximately 720 km2 West Raglan Project, on the same geological trend as the Raglan Mine, one of the richest nickel mines in Canada, in the Cape Smith Belt of northern Québec.
Knight Resources partnered with AAEC in 2003 and has completed its earn-in to a 49% interest in the entire property. Exploration is now carried out under a joint venture (AAEC 51%, Knight 49%) and AAEC is the operator of the project. Since 2003, AAEC and Knight have discovered Raglan-style, massive sulphides, net textured sulphides and disseminated sulphides in drill holes, outcrop and boulders, using an integrated and focused approach to exploration. The ongoing resource exploration program has included regional and detailed geological mapping, prospecting, fixed-wing and helicopter-borne electromagnetic/magnetic surveys, ground and down-hole electromagnetic/magnetic surveys, geochemistry and diamond drilling.
Regional interpretation identifies at least three phases/periods of ultramafic injection within the Cape Smith Belt, each of which exhibits differing emplacement timing, mode of emplacement and metal factors (metal tenors). The most prolific metal producing ultramafic event injected sills, dykes, rare feeders and debatably lavas along the contact between the Chukotat and Povungnituk Groups and produced the high-grade nickel deposits at Raglan. This same event is clearly evident at West Raglan and produced comparable mineralization. Exploration has identified seven regional areas on the property where ultramafic rock is present on the property along the “Raglan Horizon”. Mineralization is best developed at the Greater Frontier Area; however the other areas are very poorly tested.
