Brinkley Mining Plc (‘Brinkley Mining’) was incorporated in London in August 2005 for the purpose of identifying and acquiring a strategic interest in uranium resource projects that the Directors believe hold significant development opportunities.
Brinkley Mining owns 49% of Western Uranium Pty Ltd, an associate company which has been granted prospecting rights, and commenced a detailed exploration programme on the Waterval project area in South Africa. Prospecting rights on three other areas have also been applied for by Western Uranium in South Africa – Flagfontein, Damsfontein/Bloemfontein and Rietkuil. Each of these applications is in various stages of the prospecting rights process.
As part of our strategy to develop uranium assets in Africa, Brinkley Africa Limited (‘Brinkley Africa’) entered into an agreement with the Le Commissaraiat General a L’Energie Atomique (‘CGEA’) to explore and exploit the uranium assets in the DRC. In conjunction with the CGEA we have identified five areas which are prospective for uranium in the Katanga province in the south east of the DRC. We have requested exploration permits over the five areas from the Minister of Mines.
Brinkley Mining – South African Project
Waterval
The Waterval uranium deposit, like most of the deposits in the Karoo, is a typical sedimentary sandstone-type deposit. This deposit was explored in the 1970’s by both Union Carbide Corporation and The Essex Mineral Company and in the early 1980’s by the Geological Survey. During these various phases of exploration two uraniferous outcrops were identified which form prominent cliffs varying in thickness between 4 metres and 24 metres. Approximately 150 previous holes on a 100 metre by 100 metre grid were drilled. The drilling encountered uranium mineralisation as shallow as 8 metres to 13 metres in depth and at an average thickness of 1.04 metres. The average grade was calculated to be between 1,690 and 1,820 parts per million ("ppm") uranium oxide (“U3O8“) and 910 ppm molybdenum (“Mo”).
Rietkuil
The Rietkuil Prospect generally has a low relief with the maximum variation in relief not exceeding 100 m. During the 1970s a box cut was excavated on the prospect close to the Fraserburg-Beaufort West road.
The Rietkuil River and the Vlaefontein River flow from north to south through the prospect. There is a farm dam down slope and due east of the stockpiles, which is used for stock watering.
The main mineralised sandstone formation on Rietkuil is known to cover an area of approximately 25,000 hectares. Approximately 33.2 km2 of this formation occurs on Brinkley’s Rietkuil Prospect. The southern part of the Rietkuil Prospect is also underlain by large areas (greater than 15 km2 combined) of sandstone formations. The potential of these sandstones are not known.
As described in Section 4.4 of the SRK Report, the sandstone bodies of the Moordenaars Member outcrop on this prospect. Four sandstone bodies have been found, but only one sandstone (variously labelled “R3” or “C” in published accounts) contains most of the uranium anomalies. The sandstone trends north-northeast for approximately 20 km and has an average width of 6 km. It consists of a multi-storey sheet and has a maximum thickness of 36m. It dips northward at a very shallow angle of 4 degrees. The regional dip is 1.25 degrees to the north.
At Rietkuil, the uranium mineralisation usually occurs in the basal parts of the thicker fluvial sandstone sequences and tends to coincide with areas of channel over-deepening and where there is carbonaceous debris within the sandstone. It has been found (Cole, 1980b) that the mineralised sandstone was usually greater than 17 m in thickness, that the intercalated siltstone and mudstone within the sandstone were thinnest and that the sandstone to siltstone/mudstone ratio was highest.
Brinkley Mining - DRC Project
Since the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (“DRC”) cessation from Belgium in the 1960’s, the country has gone through an extended period of political and social unrest. However free and fair elections in 2006 elected President Kabila which signalled an end to the transitional government and the foundation of a new government which was announced in late February 2007 and sworn in during March 2007. Brinkley Mining believes that with an established government and its substantial mineral wealth, the DRC represents an excellent opportunity for the development of natural resources. However as with all emerging economies, political risk needs to be identified, mitigated and managed which the Company is actively focussing on.
Southern Sudan Project
The Company is progressing the applications for uranium prospecting rights in Southern Sudan. The geology of Southern Sudan consists of Precambrian Basement, with mineralisation associated with the many structural features in the area. Some recent reconnaissance exploration work has encountered radioactive readings at 5 to 6 times background. It is expected that late stage Pegmatite intrusions are primarily responsible for the uranium mineralisation in this area.
